THE WAR OF THE CELLS
(WHO’S SIDE ARE YOU ON?)
The harmful effects of " free radicals " can be devastating to the human body. They are the mortal enemy of a healthy cell in the human body. These " free radicals " are notorious for seeking out and attacking healthy cells and destroying their outer membranes eventually causing cellular degeneration and death. Scientists have long since known that these " free radicals " are some of the leading causes of disease, causing infection, stress and aging. Also, free radicals can severely affect everyday performance by slowing or halting muscle growth and by lowering aerobic capacity. Furthermore, healthy RNA and DNA, the source of life; have been known to have defects caused by " free radicals ".
Free Radicals are molecules with a single (unpaired) electron in its outer shell. Normal molecules have two (Paired) electrons in its outer shell found in the human body. When oxygen in the bloodstream combine with any of a diverse group of chemicals including those commonly found in polluted air, in primary and/or second hand cigarette smoke, in known chemical toxins; as well as, in food additives and in re-heated cooking oil free radicals are formed. In addition, normal radiation found in sunlight accelerates the productions and damage of free radicals. Oxygen consumption can increase by ten to twenty times its normal values during exercise and other aerobic activities (this is understood). With this in mind, with more oxygen flowing in the bloodstream " free radical " activity skyrockets. To make it even worse, even more devastating destruction caused by free radicals continue many hours after the exercise has ceased.
The devastating effects of free radicals can be prevented or lessened with the intake of anti-oxidants in the diet or by anti-oxidant supplements. Anti-oxidants are more complex than we give them credit for. There are many different specific types of anti-oxidants which seek out and destroy free radicals at many various cellular sites. Using only one anti-oxidant, such as Vitamin E only protects the fatty outer layers of the cell membrane. Stabilizing DNA can not be done with the consumption of Vitamin E, which is one the main effects of the anti-oxidant Vitamin C. The process in which the different anti-oxidants are delivered through out the bloodstream to protect different cell stations is referred to in science as "anti-oxidant synergy." In the bloodstream is where anti-oxidants and free radicals meet at their appropriate activity stations, it then combines converting free radicals into harmless water and oxygen. In turn, due to the replacement of higher amounts and larger range of anti-oxidants, anti-oxidants increases in the bloodstream, there is less cell damage and performance escalates and over all health improves. In fact, aside from the many scientifically compelling studies addressing the different health benefits of anti-oxidant supplementation, there have been studies completed demonstrating a dramatic decrease in injuries in athletic training with the simple addition of a good anti-oxidant complex supplement. An excellent anti-oxidant supplement should have a wide range of anti-oxidants such as found in Blue Berries, Concord grapes and Tahitian Noni.
Blue Berries neutralize free radical damage to the collagen matrix of cells and tissues that can lead to cataracts, glaucoma, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, peptic ulcers, heart disease and cancer. Anthocyanins, the blue-red pigments found in blueberries, improve the integrity of support structures in the veins and entire vascular system. Anthocyanins have been shown to enhance the effects of vitamin C, improve capillary integrity, and stabilize the collagen matrix (the ground substance of all body tissues). They work their protective magic by preventing free-radical damage, inhibiting enzymes from cleaving the collagen matrix, and directly cross-linking with collagen fibers to form a more stable collagen matrix.
Concord Grapes which contains flavonoids, is a very powerful antioxidants (Scientists have measured the health benefit of grapes and found that they contain the vitamins A, B and C, as well as thirteen minerals essential to human life. Concord grapes contain resveratrol, which demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties.)
Tahitian Noni has the highest concentration of Morinda Citrifolia L(Noni) than any other noni juice on the market. There are over 300 variations of the noni fruit, but the Morinda Citrifolia has the highest concentration of all the nutrients combined.
At the molecular and cellular levels, antioxidants have been found to benefit the body's natural ability to neutralize harmful free radicals created in processes within the cells, as well as exposure to various environmental factors such as radiation and tobacco smoke. If unchecked, these free radicals can eventually cause damage to cell walls, structures and even genetic material within the cells.
There are a variety of companies currently producing excellent anti-oxidant supplements. As time goes on, we have seen a rise in the Wellness Industry much to our advantage. We would all benefit from increasing our anti-oxidant intake to improve our quality of wellness and enhance our over-all health. More and more athletes have become wise to anti-oxidant protection and enhancement and the fact that it dramatically increases blood oxygen throughout their training and performance.
The rising awareness in our society is that prevention is better than falling into sickness because of modern day lifestyle, and the savvy are turning back to what nature has had all along for us. It’s time to get pro-active in our own health maintenance and put into our bodies what will help it run, like a well-oiled machine. After all is said and done, what in your body is winning the war – free radicals or the anti-oxidants?
